My personal preference is direct, segregated ownership with as few limits on access as possible. These would be toward the top of the list.

® Now this is interesting. The article says a company has developed a catalytic converter for diesel engines that uses silver instead of platinum. It doesn't say how efficient the new process is but mention is made of a cut in the precious metal cost of more than 90%. If we assume 95% cost reduction and use a platinum price of $2,000 and a silver price of $20, it could mean the amount of silver used in the new process could be 5 times more than the amount of platinum used currently. In other words, if silver were to replace the 4 million ounces of annual catalytic demand for platinum completely, that might represent an additional 20 million ounces of silver demand. Moreover, it could provide a great hedging strategy by going long silver and short platinum. [Tom Szabo] [4-29-08]

® Before you go "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs", let me mention this means a few million ounces of silver at most. And that assumes the crazy prediction of lower silver prices comes true: "Silver ink sales in the printable electronics business are also hurt by high prices. And with the price of silver almost doubling over the past year, this has really become an issue. Nevertheless, NanoMarkets also noted that silver prices seem to be on their way down, so perhaps price issues will not matter as much in the next year or so." As I've stated before, forget about silver demand from RFID tags, silver inks and other such industrial uses until it becomes clear that the market for these products will be huge and silver cannot be effectively substituted.
